The success of digital transformation depends heavily on your employees’ readiness to adapt. As leaders in your organization, your approach to the human element will determine whether your digital initiatives would succeed or fail.

There are five ways to prepare your workforce for digital transformation.

  1. Communicate a clear vision

Employees need to understand not just what is changing, but why. Create a compelling narrative about how digital transformation aligns with your company’s objectives and benefit everyone involved.

For example, the CEO of a manufacturing firm communicated the IoT initiative that it planned to implement to its employees. In addition to the comprehensive plan that outlined the technology to be implemented, he included competitive intelligence on their competitors’ IoT initiatives. It is natural for employees to fear for their job security as a result of digital transformation. Openly share how roles and responsibilities will change.

For example, a financial services company embarked on a claims processing automation initiative. Leaders had honest conversations about new roles and positions elimination. By establishing a skills assessment program, the company actively identified affected employees for retraining. With the transparent approach, star performers remained engaged throughout the transition.

Employees experience different emotions through the transformation journey. Create an environment where they feel secure asking questions, making mistakes, and voicing concerns without judgement.

For example, a professional service firm created a “digital transformation support team” during the implementation of their ERP. Team leaders scheduled weekly check-ins to address transition challenges. They also put in place an anonymous feedback channel where employees expressed concerns without fear of judgement. The support system helped to resolve difficulties quickly and reduced employee turnover.

The most successful digital transformations place as much emphasis on people as technology. Implementing a state-of-the-art technology doesn’t guarantee success. When you create an environment where employees feel supported rather than threatened by technological change, the human-centric approach encourages employees to be active participants rather than reluctant adopters.
