Last week, I had a conversation with a client about time tracking for tasks. He was debating whether it was a worthwhile effort. There are three reasons why time tracking is a necessity for operations improvement.
First, time tracking reveals tasks that are most time-consuming. These are the focal points for productivity improvement. The information helps to determine whether more training or process optimization is needed.
Second, time tracking offers visibility on workload. The information offers insight on where additional resources are needed. It is difficult to manage resources optimally when you don’t have any data.
Third, time tracking establishes a set of reference data for investment evaluation. The data provides a baseline to assess return on investment.
To sum up, time tracking provides intelligence on the state of operations. It is a pre-requisite for operations management.
