Your software generates numerous alerts throughout the day.

You get an alert when team tasks are overdue. Another one when customer support response time jumps.

When there are too many real-time notifications, they create numbness to important signals; signals that require immediate corrective action.

To overcome alerts fatigue, make these two refinements to your response plan.

First, finetune the threshold for alerts. Alerts are meant to initiate action, but not all alerts require immediate resolution. It is wise to set up a gauge that helps you determine which signals are critical.

Look at past results and identify an acceptable band of performance. When results fall outside that band, an immediate alert and response are necessary.

Second, develop a pre-determined response plan. The response plan is a playbook on who is accountable for taking action and what the resolution path is.

This predetermined response plan sets your team up for success. It saves you a lot of time from last minute scrambling to pull subject matter experts together and hatch an action plan. Instead, everyone is clear on who needs to be involved and what to do.

Too many alerts create stress and important signals could be missed. When you have a well-defined approach to alerts and resolution, your team would address them promptly with appropriate attention.
