Do you have multiple data sources? If you do, how do you determine which source is most trustworthy?
Answering the question about the ‘record of truth’ is a challenge for many organizations.
When teams do not align on data source, there would be little buy-in on what the results tell them. I have sat in countless team debates about the results when they don’t trust the numbers.
To get alignment on the record of truth, have an objective conversation about three things:
- First, is application is used consistently? A high adoption rate is a good indication of data completeness.
- Second, do users enter the required data diligently? Clear accountability reflects ownership and data accuracy.
- Third, what’s the probability of improper use of data fields? When data fields are not used for the intended purposes, you will end up with jumbled data which makes data cleaning a necessity. And we all know data cleaning is an ugly and time-consuming task.
Data quality is paramount to the trust factor. When you have alignment on the record of truth, your team can then focus on results and actions, the critical success factors for moving the business forward.
