Who Owns the Data?

IT tends to be the default owner of data as the team is accountable for getting systems in place and ensuring that data is accessible and secured.

IT is the expert when it comes to technology infrastructure such as operating system, hardware, software, data storage and security. But they are not experts in business.

Business knows what data they need to develop a growth plan or complete a transaction. For example, a loan officer knows what data she needs to approve a loan. A product manager sets the guidelines for accepting product returns.

Business knows best what data they need to manage the business. Therefore, business owns the data and not IT.

We need to be very clear on who owns the data because data owners are responsible for quality data.
