I continue to be amazed by the creative use of the iPad across industries, from helping young children learn in school to accessing health records. Since its launch in 2010, over 30 million units have been sold. Today, a mind boggling 140,000 apps have been developed for the iPad. One can easily list many features that make iPad a winner in the tablet market. In my mind, three things stand out:
- Convenience—it is wireless; it is light; it is truly mobile. Hotels equip staff with iPads to roam around the lobby to expedite the check-in and check-out of guests. The iPad can be loaded with comprehensive training materials for hands on training right at the work site. It is more effective than classroom training.
- Size of the screen—the iPhone is too small for a zoom-in view. You lose that big picture perspective. The iPad screen is generous for individual use and can easily accommodate sharing with two to three people. In addition, it is perfect for seniors with eye sight problems. Sumo wrestlers, who have fingers that are too big for the cell phone, find the iPad perfect for them.
- Multi-touch technology—the simple taps, swipes and pinches make surfing the internet, viewing photos, and typing emails extremely easy. It is intuitive to use. A mouse is not needed. The iPad has phenomenal potential for people with disabilities and patients with restricted mobility.
